Northwest Woodsmen vs Chicago Lions March 30, 2002 A-Side Summary On another windy day at Busse Woods, the Northwest Woodsmen played a tough match against the Chicago Lions this past weekend eventually losing 28 –18. Winning the coin toss, the Woodsmen elected to take the strong wind in the first half. In typical Woodsmen fashion, it was a physical match, with the tight five setting that tone at the first scrum down. With the wind at our backs the Woodsmen struck first with a try by tighthead prop Alex Agnos, 5-0. The Lions answered this with a try, tying the game at 5-5. Later in the half the Woodsmen capitalized on a Lions penalty and put 3 point on the board off the foot of Mike Dziurgot, 8-5. Tries by Lock, Jim Rendon and Outside Center, Bryan Karl ended the half with the Woodsmen up 18-5. The second half played in the favor of the Lions with the strong wind benefiting their kicking game. The Lions exhibited some good fitness and ball movement and started to put some points on the board. Both teams were able to sub in a good amount of players and get their boys some reps. The ending score placed the Lions ahead 27-18. Alex Agnos 1 try, Jim Rendon 1 try, Bryan Karl 1 try, Mike Dziurgot, 1 for 4 on kicks for 3 points. Man of the Match: Brendan Gorman. B-Side Summary Just like the game beforehand, the Woodsmen second XV played another physical match with a com- from-behind victory over the Lions. Opposite to the first game, the Woodsmen had the wind in their face the first half and held tight. Down at halftime the never give up attitude of the Woodsmen came out. With the score 17-24, Woodsmen 8-man Joe Loayza pounded in his second of three tries for the game, yeah that’s a hat trick. The ensuing conversion kick was put in by Flyhalf, Jason Zajicek, 24-24. 5 minutes later, with the Woodsmen knocking at the Lions 22, Zajicek split the uprights with a drop goal that put the Woodsmen up 27-24. With less than 1-minute remaining the Woodsmen put the final nail in the coffin and capped the day off with a 34-24 victory and the teams first victory for the season. No looking back now! Joe Loayza 3 tries. Thumper 1 try. Someone 1 try. Jason Zajicek 1 drop goal and 3 of 5 on conversions. Man of the Match: Joe Loayza
